DIY Wipes for Cheap!

Be sure to check out my "Everyone Wins Giveaway!"
- Open until October 6, 2011-

So when I first heard about this,
I thought the lady was nuts!
Who would want to take the time
to make their own baby wipes?

Then I heard how much it cost her
and it really caught my interest.
Most Deal Sites say if you can get
wipes for $.01 to $.02 a wipe,
that's a great deal and stock up.

The math on making your own wipes?
$.005 to $.008 a wipe!
We now spend about $10 a year on wipes!
AWESOME!
Ok, so here's how!

You'll need the following items:
  1. Bounty Paper Towels Mega PLUS Roll - These paper towels are very thick and will not break. Do NOT get thin cheap paper towels or you won't be very happy, trust me! I get mine at Costco for around $17 for 12 rolls, which works great because we can use them for our regular paper towel needs and our wipes. We usually go through 6 rolls a year for wipes.
  2. 2 T. Baby Wash  - Any brand will do, I get the cheap brand from Wal-Mart.
  3. 1 1/2 T. Baby Oil  - Again, any brand is fine. I get the cheap brand from Wal-Mart.
  4. 2 Cups Warm Water
  5. Waterproof Sterilite Container - I got mine from Wal-Mart for about $4. Any waterproof container large enough (3 Liters) will work. Here's one similar from Amazon.
Take your paper towel roll and cut it in half so it looks like a large roll of toilet paper. (Note: If your husband has a thing for knives like mine does, this is a great excuse for him to be able to use them!) Remove the cardboard tube from the center, as shown below. Next, mix your warm water, 2 T. baby wash and 1 1/2 T. baby oil in your waterproof container. Place your cut paper towel roll in the container and put the lid on. Now flip your container upside down for 1 to 2 hours so the warm water and soap can soak all the way through the paper towels. When using the wipes, pull from the center, as shown.

You can also use these to
refill your little wipe containers!
We just pull out about 10 sheets
and fold them accordion style
in the container.
They will pull through the slot just fine!

I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions!
This has saved us so much money
with our little girl.
When we went camping this summer,
everyone was using them because
they work so well for everything!

Thanks for stopping by
and leaving your wonderful comments!

  1. I love this idea! I've heard of people making their own wipes but haven't looked into it too much. Even if we used all 12 rolls in one year, $17 annually for wipes sounds great to me! Thanks for a great tip :) I'm off to link to your party- thanks for the invite as well :)

  13. How long will these last ? Do they go bad ? I guess i could make them as needed huh? lol!

  14. I don't think they would go bad, just maybe get a little dry. Our daughter is in the process of potty training so we're going through them a lot slower now and we've been fine with them lasting for at least up to 2 months for now. I'm not sure if you're looking for longer, but you could just make a little more of the mixture and pour it on top if it gets dry. Hope this helps! :)

  15. I tried to comment before but it didn't show up somehow. I have 2 questions. 1) How do you cut it? I used a bread knife to saw through it but ended up with some pretty ragged edges and a lot of little fluff pieces! 2) How do you get the cardboard roll out of the middle? I ended up hand folding the whole roll to get it off the cardboard. They are working well though! Thank you!!

    1. Hi Jen!

Thanks for your comment. So my husband actually uses his machete to cut the paper towels, lol. The bigger the knife you use the less sawing you'll have to do and it will cut much cleaner. And I've actually started removing the cardboard after you've let it soak up the water and soap mixture. It will slide right out. Hope this helps! Happy New Year!

    2. Machete! Wow. Sounds like he has fun with it!! :) Unfortunately I bought a container that only fits 1/2 of the 1/2 roll so getting the tube out isn't going to work that way for now. Oh well. Thank you so much for this!
