DIY Privacy Door for Under $10

When we first bought our house,
I really didn't like our front door.
I'd grown up with a solid door
and loved the privacy.
I could walk by or check the door
and no one would know I was there.

Then we bought our new house
and it had a beautiful glass front.
We have a split entry so the only
way to get downstairs is to walk
past the front door.

I hated feeling like I was on "display"
every moment I was home.
What if I hadn't done my hair
or put on my makeup yet?
The whole neighborhood would know!

Getting a new door was not an option
so I covered it with Fake Snow.

The only problem was people bumped it all the time.
It would mess up the window
and they'd leave my house covered in fake snow.

I started shopping for fabric to hang over the windows
and finally found some I liked.
However, as I temporarily hung it over the door,
I realized how dark it made our front entryway.
I'd grown to love that natural light that came in!

Then it hit me!
Why not make frosted glass?!
Privacy? Check. Natural Light? Check. Beautiful? Double check.

I went to our local craft store
and bought a can of Frosted Spray Paint.
We covered everything in newspaper
and sprayed two coats.

The outcome was even better than I expected!
During the day, I can walk past it without being seen.
At night, you also can't be seen unless you're
right up next to the door.
And even then, it's just a blurred shadow.

It's worked great for us and was so much cheaper
than buying a new door.

I'd love to hear your questions and comments!
Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Thanks for sharing. Didn't know they made this. I have the same problem. Karen

  2. Your door looks great! I love that stuff -- used it on our bathroom window for a little more modesty.

  3. I think if I had a clear door, I'd do the same thing!

  4. I've never heard of frosted spray paint before! How fabulous! and nice to know it works so well!

  5. I didn't know they made this stuff either! I hung a lace curtain, but if I had seen this stuff I would have given it a try.

  6. You did a nice job... I have a door like this one but only one little spot is clear in middle to see through..

  7. I didn't even know they made this! Thanks for sharing. Thanks for linking to Things I've Done Thursday!

  8. How do you remove the paint if you don't like it? With a razor?

  9. @Anonymous

Yes, you could remove it with paint thinner or acetone and a razor. :)

  10. That's a good idea, I'll keep it in mind for my next house! To solve that problem in my current home, I bought cheap magnetic rods for the door, they're actually kinda flimsy, but effective. Luckily, I have a square shape rather than oval, so I just hung sheer curtain panels. It's the same effect as the frosted glass :-)

  11. Omg, my mom has been asking me to come up with a solution for her front door for the longest ... so glad I found this!! Thank you!

  12. Did you only spray paint it on the inside?

    1. I just did the does leave a rougher surface so I still wanted to be able to clean the rain off the outside and leave the slick surface. I don't think it would offer any extra "privacy" by doing both sides. Hope this helps!
